The relationship between intellectual capital and employees' productivity: evidence from the Gulf Cooperation Council

ملخص البحث المنشور:
This study examines the relationship between intellectual capital (IC) and employees' productivity (EP) in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. Using the value-added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) to measure IC performance, data from 198 firms listed in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain during the period 2012–2014 were analyzed. A panel regression model, estimated using the pooled-corrected estimation technique, was employed with EP as the dependent variable. Firm size and sector were controlled for in the analysis. IC was measured through its components: human capital efficiency (HCE), structural capital efficiency, and capital employed efficiency (CEE). The findings reveal that IC investments predominantly derive value from investments in human capital. Results from the panel-corrected ordinary least squares estimation indicate that VAIC and its components are positively and significantly associated with variations in EP. Among these components, HCE contributes the most, while CEE contributes the least to VAIC. This study underscores the critical role of human capital investment as a key driver of firm performance. It encourages management and leadership within the GCC region to prioritize human capital to achieve organizational goals. To the best of the coauthors' knowledge, this is the first empirical investigation of the relationship between IC and EP in the GCC region, providing valuable insights for researchers and practitioners alike.
