Needs Analysis of Undergraduate Translation Programs: Jordanian Students’ Perspectives
سنة النشر: 2022
ملخص البحث المنشور:
In needs analysis, researchers attempt to characterize weaknesses and challenges and point out causes and suggest answers. It can be viewed as the process of recognizing the difference between what the existing conditions are and seeking solutions. In teaching, the concept of needs analysis can be approximated to the difference between the general objectives set for the curriculum and students’ performance. This study addresses participants’ perceptions of their abilities and needs and identifies their comprehensive practices before and during translation tasks. For this purpose, a five-point Likert-type questionnaire consisting of two sections was used. The first elicits demographic data, whereas the second consists of forty-four items eliciting data related to the participants’ perceptions of their needs. The study sample consisted of 150 undergraduate students in the translation departments in three universities in Jordan. The results showed the types of structural and cultural problems that participants faced and their need to develop their overall language proficiency in English and to acquire the ability to correct and edit the translation products. Finally, the participants tended to overestimate their writing abilities in English and the use of different translation strategies.
